Atlantic States Reports to Community Advisory Panel on Improved Pollution Controls
...Last night´s meeting of the Atlantic States Community Advisory Panel, featured a report by Vice President and General Manager, Mitchell Kidd, on dramatic improvements in the foundry´s environmental performance. Noting that over the past several years the facility has reinvested over $6 million in improved air pollution control systems, Kidd reviewed the payoff from that investment by sharing the results of the most recent analysis of the facility's air emissions, conducted in November 2003 under oversight by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The tests showed that emissions from Atlantic States were well below the levels allowed by its air permit, in some cases as much as one thousand times lower than permitted levels.

In the case of emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and carbon monoxide, which had been the source of regulatory problems in the past, since 2001 the facility was able to cut carbon monoxide emissions in half and VOC emissions by over 300 tons per year, to near zero.

With respect to concerns about noise and odors from the Atlantic States facility, neighbors participating in the CAP reported significant improvements from the measures taken in response to CAP input. Atlantic States committed to continue working to address any unresolved problems and asked for assistance from the CAP and neighbors through use of the new complaint responsed system, so the company can track down the source of any problems and work to eliminate them. The company has prepared a flyer on the the complaint system for distribution to Phillipsburg residents.

The Atlantic States Community Advisory Panel is comprised of representatives from Phillipsburg town council; Phillipsburg Mayor Harry Wyant' Phillipsburg Fire Department; Warren County Department of Public Safety; Warren County Health Department; neighbors who live adjacent to the foundry; Phillipsburg Riverview Organization; Warren County Regional Chamber of Commerce; Phillipsburg Area Chamber of Commerce; Warren-Northampton Regional Air Quality Advisory Panel; and United Steelworkers Local #9404.
